We are going to be getting ready for Open House (March 22nd). After visiting with the teacher please come by and take stroll through the garden...we've been working on it throughout the year. We have some salads, greens, and flowers growing right now.Took these pictures on crazy hair day This week we tasted; Mustard Greens, Mushrooms, Carrots, and Kale (which turned our smiles and tounges green). As you can see from the pictures below, the kids are still working to spruce up the garden and afterwards enjoy tasting a variety of raw veggies. This week we tasted the difference between a sweet potato and a yam (the yam was the clear winner), plus we had our usual favorites jicama and carrots. A huge thanks to the room parents and Mr. Craig Anderson for helping to make our garden program meaningful. Special thanks to the moms and dads of Mrs. Davis' class for coming out to help this week. The garden is coming along...thanks to all the perennials planted the previous years we have lots of flowers and buds to appreciate so our focus is on tidying up the areas outside the garden beds. This week the kids unloaded 2 yards of mulch and continued to clear the walkways around to beds.
We've also cleared several garden beds of weeds and to keep them from growing back we are laying a thick layer of mulch over the beds. Hi Royals, sorry we did not have garden last Friday...it was just too hot. Let's hope October brings us some milder weather. Below are some pictures of Mrs. Stacy's students that came out to help me last Wednesday. These pictures show what is happening in the garden at this time. The stunning blue and purple flower is a Dutch Iris, hopefully we will have some blooming for open house. On February second the legendary groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, saw his shadow which means that we still have six more weeks of winter ahead of us. Although this may be of some concern to those who live near Phil's home state of Pennsylvania, our CHES garden is filled with clues indicating that in Temecula Spring is just around the corner. (Picture retrieved from https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B81tHuOIUAA8rsI.png ) In our garden there are clues everywhere telling us that Spring is near, see the pictures below. What have we been planting?New tools The past two weeks we've discussed the snowfall that we had over the winter break and the effect it had on our local plants. Although we are grateful for the needed water to this region many local plants are not used to the cold or weight of a blanket of snow and were damaged or destroyed by it. Prior to going on break we planted cabbage, sweet banana peppers, red bell peppers, hawaiin sage, cinnamon basil, and parsley (Donated by Bonnie Plants nursery) and all but the cabbage and the parsley were destroyed. Planting & PruningThis week we planted radishes. Planting white and yellow onions. Pruning trees and roses. Look at these beautiesMom & dad, ever wonder why we love garden so much? It's all the fresh air we get.
